About the Show
Learn about UAlbany's sexuality week in memory of Matthew Shepherd Learn about V-Day around the world. Learn about Vagina Monologue playwright Eve Ensler
Metroland says:Metroland says: For those women-and men-who come from the "down there" generation, the University at Albany's production of the Vagina Monologues last week was probably an eye-opening experience. That's because Eve Ensler's controversial play, which deals with incest, rape, domestic battery and sexual repression, doesn't mince words. So instead of the "down there" euphemism for female genitalia, the characters in The Vagina Monologues take a much more in-your-face approach to discussing their most intimate areas. "I call it cunt," one nameless character declares. "In Westchester, they called it a pooki, in New Jersey, a twat," says another. Others tell the audience what their vaginas would wear, if they could don clothing, and what their vaginas would say if they could speak. The production of the Vagina Monologues, performed Feb. 14, 16 and 17 at UAlbany's Performing Arts Center, was part of an international V-Day initiative to end violence against women and girls. According to Stacey Kaiser, who directed last week's performances, Ensler allows college groups involved in the V-Day initiative to perform her play for free during a two-week period surrounding Valentine's Day to raise awareness-and money-for local domestic-violence groups. Kaiser said that all the performers, producers and stagehands volunteered their time to make the event a success. "In ticket sales alone, we raised around $4,500," Kaiser said. "And all the money we're getting is going to domestic violence and rape-crisis centers. . . . I hope we raised some awareness about the diversity of different women's experiences, predicaments, situations-for example, like the woman in one monologue who's 72 years old who has never had an orgasm." TriviaBryan Thomas and Vagina Monologue playwright Eve Ensler are both graduates of this college. |
