DAY ONE: September 4, 2004
3:57 p.m. Time and effort.
I got to the Lark at 1. Just in time for the crew to break for lunch. A brother knows.
And yes, I was the last one here. So very me.
Everyone's great. The time, the effort, the professionalism. As a for instance: I think it took Heather more time to print and frame the fabulous black and white photos we're going to hang on the walls than it did for us to record the entire Babylon record.
Okay, back to getting in the way of people who actually know what they're doing.
7:15 p.m. Good luck with that.
GINA (applying makeup to my face): I want to put some of this powder on you to help control the sweat without making you look white.
BRYAN: Good luck with that.
8:39 p.m. Wanting to apologize.
We just finished the first shot of the project. And we're right on schedule.
It's an exterior long shot of the front of Lark Tavern, with me walking up the sidewalk, guitar in hand, to the sleepy, indifferent bouncer. A few walkthroughs and three actual takes.
We're fairly conspicuous in front of the Lark right now: lights, generator, cameras. Cars slowing down to take in what's going on, people making little comments while passing on the sidewalk. Between takes I was in the dark alley, secretly looking back at the passing peeps while waiting for Carl to call "Action!" Wanting to apologize to them for some reason.
Right now, they're setting up a tracked shot of my feet walking down the sidewalk. Matt says it's going to take about 45 minutes to get it ready.
You read that right. 45 minutes for my damn feet.
10:15 p.m. Actually apologizing.
We actually made good time with the next coupla shots - a closeup of me walking up to the front door, and a closeup of the bouncer.
But there's a big hip-hop show going on tonight. And controlling the traffic flow through the front door is a problem. There's a lot of real apologizing going on: to Tess, to the guys performing tonight, to the patrons. Who knew the joint was going to be bumpin' this early in the evening?
Early for Albany, anyway.
It got a little tense there for a coupla minutes, but thankfully my closeup took just two takes. Break it down.
We're inside tomorrow. And upstairs. And outta the way of the Lark's regular business. Thankfully.
I'll post some pics when I get home.
